There, their and they’re
These words (depending on accent or dialect), have almost identical pronunciations. Mistakes involving them are most often found in online comments sections, where grammar warriors will cheerfully (or angrily) point them out!
There means:
That place or point — He parked the car over there.
A moment — I am just going to stop you there.
Or an exclamation — There! I have managed to move the piano!
Their is the possessive form of they, it indicates something belonging to or associated with a group. It can also be used as a gender neutral possessive:
Lionesses are very protective of their cubs.
The football supporters cheered as loudly as they could, but their team still lost.
The new employee starts today and I do not know their name!
They’re is a contracted form of they are. If your sentence does not make sense when you add they are, then you do not need they’re:
(Correct) They’re (they are) going to the football.
(Incorrect) He parked the car over they’re (they are).
